Thermally Modified Wood Dock Project Near Franklin, TX

For a new ranch cabin rental property near Franklin, Texas, the owners wanted docks that would complement the natural setting while also holding up to regular guest use and exposure to the elements. Texas Ranch Resources completed two custom docks for the property, each with a different layout and purpose.

The Challenge: Finding the Right Long-Lasting Dock Material

Material selection was an important part of this project. The docks needed the warm, natural appearance of real wood, but this commercial rental setting also called for a material suited for long-term outdoor exposure.

Thermally modified wood decking provided the combination the property owners were looking for. Through the thermal modification process, the wood gains increased resistance to moisture, rot, and weathering while retaining the appearance and character of natural wood.

The Solution: Durable Materials and Proven Construction Methods

For the decking, thermally modified wood was chosen, a material that retains the natural beauty of real wood while offering enhanced resistance to moisture, rot, and weathering. It was a good fit for the property’s rustic setting and the demands of the Texas climate.

Just as important as the decking was the structure supporting it. Our crews used a hydro-driven piling system with galvanized pilings to provide a stable foundation for each dock. We also used corrosion-resistant bolts and screws throughout construction rather than nails, helping create strong, secure connections designed for long-term outdoor use.

Together, these materials and construction methods provided the durability needed for a commercial property while maintaining the natural appearance the owners wanted.

Two Dock Designs, Different Guest Experiences

A rental property benefits from offering guests different ways to enjoy the water. Rather than building two identical docks, we constructed two configurations that serve different recreational purposes.

  1. The first features a T-shaped layout, providing additional space at the end of the dock for fishing, relaxing, or simply taking in the views.
  2. The second incorporates a built-in boat slip, offering a convenient place for guests to access and secure a boat.

Both docks share a consistent appearance while providing guests with different options for enjoying their stay.

The Result: Two Docks Built to Last

The completed docks add useful recreational spaces to the cabin property without looking out of place in the rural setting. Guests have dedicated areas for fishing, spending time by the water, and accessing a boat, while the thermally modified wood gives both docks a natural finished appearance.

This project is also a good example of how dock design and material selection can work together. Instead of building two identical structures, each dock was configured around a different use while maintaining a cohesive look across the property.
